Fishing Report
July 17, 2025
July is here and unfortunately it has brought low water and warmer temps. Forecast shows we may receive some rain this week and that will help flows and temps. Most rivers in the area are lower than average for this time of year and it shows. Hatches have been short lived and the fish seem to be a bit tight lipped on the dry fly. Hopper dropper and double dries have been the most consistent rigs right now although some people are still throwing bobbers. Keep an eye on water temps and let the fish rest.
Gunnison River
The Gunnison is producing a number of different hatches right now including Caddis, Pmd’s. Caddis and pmd’s are the most prolific hatches through town and towards Almont. The best hatches have been occurring between 12 and 2 pm. Although the hatches aren’t as thick as they have been in years past, the fish are still keying in on them during that afternoon window. I am finding fish in pocket water and shallow riffles and runs on the dry fly.
If I am not throwing dries, I am throwing a hopper dropper on shelves, pockets and banks.
Stonefly nymphs, Pheasant tail (14-18), Radiation Baetis (16-20), 20 Incher stone (14-10), Pats Rubber legs (14-10). Caddis dries (14-18), Drake dries, Chubby chernobyls, stimulators, pmd dries (16-18).
Taylor River
Fish are sitting in large runs, pocket water and color changes. The dry fly action should be heating up soon with Caddis.
Hopper dropper with larger stones, caddis and baetis nymphs.
